Our Impact

When Central Michigan University chose to charter its first school in 1994, it had a vision of more than just creating new, quality educational choices for Michigan families.

CMU envisioned building new systems necessary to support the needs of charter school leaders; leading in initiatives that help teachers individualize instruction and reach every student; and developing new approaches that would have an impact of providing better educational options for all Michigan families.

And what an impact CMU is making. With more than a dozen years of experience, The Governor John Engler Center for Charter Schools has proven to be:

A leader in public education. The tools developed by the Center to oversee and support CMU-authorized schools not only have directly helped charter school leaders improve performance, but they also have indirectly driven performance and accountability at all public schools.

A leader in chartering schools. As the first public entity in Michigan to charter a public school, CMU had to develop the expertise, systems and procedures necessary for charter public school pioneers to build successful schools. These were developed with a focus on quality, and this leadership has earned CMU state and national recognition as being one of the nation's exemplary authorizers.

A leader in sharing our expertise with others. As an incubator for talent, the Center employs passionate professionals who are hard at work advancing public education through their positions at the Center and also through their leadership in numerous organizations.

This impact has been recognized both in Michigan and throughout the nation by the Michigan Department of Education, the U.S. Department of Education, other charter public school authorizers, and by numerous education research, advocacy, and support organizations.

But most importantly, this impact is being felt every day in the lives of the tens of thousands of families whose children attend CMU-authorized schools-families who have access to a high-quality educational choice that could not exist without the Center's leadership-as well as in the lives of countless other students in other public schools whose educations have been improved by the initiatives pioneered at the Center.
